I rediscovered Story People the other day, and I think my general mood of the past few weeks can be pretty well summed up by this picture.
I feel like I ought to be more emotionally distraught. Or even if I'm supposed to be over it by now, I feel like I should have been more emotionally distraught before than I was. Not that I'm complaining, it's just a little weird. I guess at some level I'm liking the freedom more than I expected to. I do miss having someone to be physically close to, but it seems that the emotional gap has already been mostly filled by other things. I suppose that's no surprise--what with my trip to Italy with Danielle, Croatia, and San Diego with my aunt, uncle, and cousin all coming up soon... I have a lot of things to look forward to.
Last week I took a bus downtown after work, laid down in the grass at my favorite spot by the creek under a jacaranda, and listened to my favorite classical guitar piece. It was an absolutely perfect day: warm but not hot, moderately windy, crisp, not a cloud in the sky. Staring up through the branches, watching the cottonwood float by and listening to one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written (in my opinion)... I felt like not a thing was wrong with the world.
In other news, I got my hair cut short about a week ago... it was kind of a sudden decision and I'm not sure what inspired it, but I felt I needed a change. It's roughly to my jawline now with shortish bangs. Kind of an Amelie thing. It's cute, it's new, and it's less trouble. I guess it makes me look quite a bit younger though, especially in pigtails... my parents and I went to a restaurant for lunch in Cambria on Fathers' Day and the waitress grabbed a coloring page for me. Embarrassing. >_<
My dad's friend's son has been staying with us for the past few days (and will be here until Thursday). He's a sweet kid--shy and very reserved, but sweet. We all went to Ragged Point for a picnic last Sunday and then spent some time on the beach and at a beautiful waterfall right off the highway. He and I also had a photoshoot on Monday because he's a cellist (and a damn good one at that) and he needed headshots. Our new house in Atascadero made a perfect set (it's a Tudor style house with fancy archways and grand wooden doors with iron embellishments like on a castle entrance), and I'm pretty satisfied with the results. I've already put my favorites on flickr: I know you're curious! [click me!]
I also made some improvements to my photo site: Check it! Mainly I just added pictures, got rid of the Wix company logos, and changed the photo expand options so that they get bigger and the back fades to black so the other thumbnails don't compete with the selected expanded photo. Still haven't figured out how to make a button that navigates back to the portfolio page instead of the home page... but I really am extremely happy with that website building program. It looks professional, it's clean and user friendly, it's attractive, it has great image quality, and with the pro option (which is cheap and definitely worth the money) I can use my own domain name, get rid of logos, and I have more personalization options. I'm sure it will be a great tool once I really start trying to make this passion into a business.
I've been trying to compile a list of books I want to read over the summer. I was in Barnes & Noble the other day and decided to start Truman Capote's In Cold Blood while I waited for a friend. I'd seen two really excellent films about Capote and his experience with the Kansas murders, and I thought it might be interesting to read his account of the events. I got about 60 pages in before my friend arrived and I found it surprisingly dull. I hadn't gotten to the point yet where Capote meets the inmates though, so I expect it will pick up after that, and I do think I'll finish it. I've also been curious about Catch 22 because it's such a widely known and well regarded novel... so I think I'll pick that up as well.
Yeesh. What else.
I've been writing this in installments during my down time at work and at the moment I'm not feeling particularly inspired. I guess I'll just end abruptly here and write again when I have more to say. :)
Toodles.
